This warm season grass is a dwarf Maiden Grass that forms finely-textured dense clumps 2-3 ft. tall and 3-4 ft. wide with showy plumes that rise above the foliage up to 5 ft. tall. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Yaku Jima’ has narrow, arching leaves that are a rich green color, with a silvery-white midrib that gives them a unique, almost iridescent quality. In fall, when the grass begins to go dormant, the foliage color changes into a golden amber then fades to beige. Tall feathery, pink-hued plumes appear in late summer and gradually mature to silvery-white. Both the flowers and foliage last throughout the winter providing interest in the winter garden.
Unlike ‘Adagio’, which is similar in size, ‘Yaku Jima’ is not a specific clone but was originally introduced to the U.S.from seed. It is generally considered a dwarf form of ‘Gracillimus’. Both are dwarf Maiden Grasses and are good choices for small gardens.

In modern gardens, mass plantings create a simple, minimalist look, while in cottage gardens, it can be mixed with other flowering plants for a more naturalistic feel. This dwarf maiden grass will add tranquility in any Asian inspired garden. Use in containers to add height, texture, and movement to the courtyard, balcony, or patio. Additionally, Miscanthus sinensis 'Yaku Jima' can be used to create a natural privacy screen, as the dense foliage and height provide excellent coverage.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Yaku Jima’ is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal care. It prefers moist, well-draining loam soil and full sun to part shade, and once established, it is drought-tolerant.
Water deeply and regularly the first few months after planting to allow the roots to grow and become established in the soil. Drought tolerant once established but looks best with supplemental water, especially during hot summers.
Prune in late winter or early spring to make way for new growth in spring. Cut foliage back to 3-5 inches above the ground. Fertilizer is not necessary but applying a balanced fertilizer like G&B Organics All Purpose Fertilizer (4-4-4) in spring will promote healthy growth.
Miscanthus grass is extremely hardy as well as pest and disease resistant. It is also deer, rabbit, pollution, and salt tolerant.
