Description

Cistus x purpureus is an attractive Mediterranean shrub with eye-catching 3-inch blooms of hot pink papery petals each dotted with a burgundy spot that surrounds the showy golden-yellow stamens at the center of the flower. Orchid Rockrose is a mounding evergreen plant with fragrant resinous narrow greyish-green leaves. Low maintenance and tough, this rock rose tolerates poor soil, heat, coastal wind, salt spray, and drought. Use in rock gardens, mass plantings, borders, or as an accent plant in a dry garden. Great for erosion control on slopes.

Plant care

Grows best in well-drained soils. Water regularly after planting until roots are established then reduce frequency. Shelter from cold dry wind but tolerates cool coastal breezes and salt spray. Tolerates reflected heat from sidewalks and some neglect. Prune annually after flowering to maintain size and tidy appearance.
