    Description

Iris germanica 'Ida Red' is an exciting bearded iris with beautiful deep burgundy velvet flowers and golden beards. This stunning perennial not only adds a touch of beauty to any garden but also thrives in the California landscape.

Bearded iris have beautiful blooms and the ability to survive months without water and they deserve greater use in the gardens of California. There are so many bearded iris varieties to choose from but most require a winter freeze to bloom and not all varieties are rebloomers or suited for the California climate. Ida Red Bearded Iris is a rebloomer and uniquely adapted to low or no frost winters and coastal fog, perfectly suited for the California landscape.

Iris germanica ‘Ida Red’ is a tall bearded iris with glowing deep wine red flowers that reaches up to 36 inches tall. This burgundy reblooming bearded iris has 4-5 bloom cycles per year. Silvery gray-green leaves emerge from rhizomes to form flat fans of upright sword-shaped foliage that develop into 2 ft. wide clumps. ‘Ida Red’ is a vigorous bearded iris that will bloom reliably in California’s mild climate.

‘Ida Red’ is a resilient and versatile Tall Bearded iris that can be used in a variety of design styles such as cottage gardens, formal gardens, and cutflower gardens. This bearded iris flourishes in drought tolerant gardens amid California native plants and succulents, or in traditional gardens with roses and daylilies. With its striking burgundy blooms and attractive foliage, it is perfect for adding color and texture to any landscape design.

Iris germanica 'Ida Red' is a stunning bearded iris that is well suited for the California climate and is a must-have for any garden enthusiast looking for a low-maintenance and visually appealing addition to their landscape. With its rich, velvety burgundy flowers, Ida Red is a bearded iris that will rebloom multiple times throughout the year and bring beauty and joy for years to come.

    Plant Care

Bearded Iris requires little maintenance and thrives in well-draining soil, with a minimum of 6 hours of full sun. In hotter inland climates, ‘Ida Red’ is best with afternoon shade, and is more shade tolerant than most Tall Bearded irises.

Plant your bearded iris with the rhizomes (swollen tuber-like roots) barely below the soil surface. The rhizomes should be lightly covered with approximately ¼” to ½” of soil covering them depending on climate or soil type. Do not smother your bearded iris with mulch or ground covers and be sure to remove any fallen leaf debris or weeds out of your iris beds. Avoid soggy, shady areas with poor air circulation. Good drainage is essential to avoid rhizome rot.

Newly planted rhizomes need moisture to develop their root systems. Once established, reduce frequency. The watering frequency will depend on several factors such as soil type, location, and climate. Overwatering of Irises is a common mistake and can lead to rot. Best to watered deeply and infrequently.

Pruning is typically not necessary, although deadheading spent blooms can encourage new growth and prolong blooming.

For optimum bloom, divide clumps every 2-4 years if they become overcrowded to reinvigorate the declining flower display. Best done in late August or September.

Fertilize with a well-balanced fertilizer in late winter-early spring and again in late summer-early fall. Apply around rhizomes but not on them. 1-2 inches of compost applied annually is beneficial.

Iris germanica 'Ida Red' is a low-maintenance perennial that is perfect for the California garden or landscape.
